Breville BES920XL Dual Boiler Espresso Machine Review

It takes years to learn and understand the science behind brewing the perfect espresso shot. Professional-grade coffee makers exude extraordinary confidence when it comes to preparing the most beloved beverage with its control over a range of factors that govern coffee extraction. However, not only do they cost a fortune, but they are also extremely difficult for anyone (other than a barista) to use. A ton of controls more often than less almost seems like Latin who just wants a good cup of coffee. The Breville BES920XL Dual Boiler Espresso Machine is a much-needed reprieve from the clutches of espresso-making oblivion.

Key Features of the Breville BES920XL

Dual Boiler & Pump:

Breville’s BES920XL Espresso Machine features a double boiler mechanism which facilitates the simultaneous steam generation and coffee extraction. A Proportional-Integral-Derivative Temperature Control Unit automatically regulates water temperature. It also provides manual control if you wish to experiment with the composition of your brew. Its 15-bar pressure pump for bean extraction juices out optimal flavor from the ground.

Display Screen:

The BES920XL comes with an inbuilt LCD display that indicates everything from clean cycle times to shot cycles i.e. the duration of an ongoing espresso extraction. It also gives you the power to program your preferences.

Descaling Access:

An 84-ounce water tank is housed in the back of the machine. It can be filled with water directly or be detached from the assembly. It comes with hardness testing strips to detect the quality of water and suggests you to initiate a descaling process if necessary. Don’t know how to do it? No problem. The Breville BES920XL’s display will guide you through the entire process.
The BES920XL is visually a lot similar to its predecessor except that it consists of two screws in the front that can be loosened for descaling the boilers.

Razor Dosing:

Breville’s patented Razor Dozing equipment gives you the capability to dispose excess ground coffee. Its unique design gives you an optimum ground amount in the porta-filter for maximum flavor generation.

Swivelling Steam Wand:

The BES920XL’s dual boiler system enables you to texture your milk or cream simultaneously with coffee extraction. This is feasible because of its Italian double-pump system powering water at 4.5 bar for effective frothing.
Unlike most coffee machines, it also features a dedicated outlet for hot water in case you feel like having an Americano.

User Opinion about the Breville Bes920xl Dual Boiler

According to the Breville BES920XL’s reviews online, users found it extremely easy to use compared to other dual boiler machines in the market. Though it sports an all stainless-steel chassis, users complained that the make felt a lot cheaper in quality. The innards are not full metal but users believe it was a worthy trade-off given the 920XL’s performance and price-tag.

Long term users of Breville’s products found the BE920XL a much-needed upgrade from its predecessor, the 900XL. Its user-friendly controls found favoritism amongst most users since there are not many dual boiler machines available in the market, let alone any decent brewing capacity.

My Experience Breville Dual Boiler BES920XL

Personally, I’m not a coffee geek. I prefer coffee over other beverages because it helps me kick away my morning blues and gets me rejuvenated for the day. Along with that, I do not like to spend wait for my cuppa’ joe, let alone tinkering with various brew settings. The Breville BES920XL’s dual pump mechanism enables me to texture my milk with some solid steam generation as the espresso is extracted from the beans.

The one factor I regret not considering is the absence of an integrated bean hopper and grinder. Feeding my externally ground puck of coffee to this machine not only leads to a mess, but also increases the time spent on brewing the espresso, my primary concern regarding coffee machines. Though it weighs a standard 30 pounds, it feels a lot bigger and consumes a generous amount of space on my counter. In comparison to my previous machines, the BES920XL is also more of a power hog.

Comparison between Breville BES920XL and DeLonghi ESAM3500.N Magnifica Digital Machine

The primary standout feature that differentiates the DeLonghi ESAM3500.N from the BES920XL is the integrated conical burr grinder for in-house bean grinding. Compared to BES920XL’s 84 oz. water tank, the ESAM3500 houses a slightly smaller tank at 60 oz. With a dual boiler system, both these machines are capable of steaming milk simultaneously to achieve a foamier froth.

The ESAM3500.N offers a variety of options concerning the strength of coffee brewed. Its patented ‘Cappuccino System’ presents steamed and frothed milk for lattes and cappuccinos alike. The latter is provided with automatic controls for setting shot times and program temperature stabilization, just like the BES920XL. It, however, lacks any pressure control ability. The BES920XL and ESAM3500.N share features like a hot water outlet for hot chocolate or Americano and a cup warmer built on top of both machines. The BES920XL offers an option to choose single or double cups whereas the DeLonghi ESAM provides adjustable spouts for a lot more choices.
